Here are our top tips for selling domain names. By following our recommendations you should be able to improve your chances for success.

Identify potential buyers first!

The first thing you need to do is identify who might be looking for the domain names you want to sell. That may seem obvious but many beginners buy up domain names that they believe can be sold in the future for a profit.

It's important to find out what people are actually looking to buy rather than what you think will sell. Buying domains for resale without knowing if there's a market or not is an almost sure path to failure.

We've seen it many times. Someone buys a domain because they think it's worth a lot of money to someone only to find out nobody actually wants to buy it!

For example, in one instance we know of a person that bought the .net version of what looked like a popular term that would be easy to sell. Afterall, the .com version was on the first page of all the major search engines.

However, after further investigation, the seller found out that the domain name was a trademarked term! In addition, anyone looking for that name would type in the .com version nearly every time so the .net version got little to no search traffic.

Specialize!

Do your research and find niche markets where you can obtain multiple domain names to sell.

Look for location specific domain names or specific market related names such as insurance, law, weight loss, dating, etc.  Then, using tip #1 above, find out who the big names are in those niches.

With a little research you should be able to find potential buyers looking to acquire portfolios of domain names related to the same topic or niche.

In almost every niche there will be a few big players that would be more than happy to buy domain names from you if you have done your research and found good names related to their niche.

Selling domain names is no different than selling any other type of product or service. You need to do your research and make sure there's a market for what you're selling! Just because you "think" a domain name is great doesn't mean it actually is great.

By identifying buyers first, and then specializing in niche domains, your chances of success in selling domain names greatly improves!
